What is a Medical Marijuana Caregiver?

An authorized caregiver for medical marijuana is permitted to lawfully buy and hold medical marijuana in the name of a qualified patient who is eligible for its therapeutic use. This arrangement is referred to as caregiver referral. In this capacity as the patient’s official companion and guardian, the caregiver assumes the role of the patient’s advocate. Those possessing medical power of attorney, the patient’s parents, or the patient’s legal guardian, are all eligible to fulfill the role of caregivers.

Caregivers supporting eligible patients enrolled in the state’s medical marijuana initiative are required to meet specific criteria and follow designated limitations as specified in these regulations.

Applicant Requirements for Georgia Medical Marijuana Caregivers

  • Authorized guardians of an adult with one or more qualifying conditions as outlined by the law.
  • Parents or legal guardians of a minor child with one or more qualifying conditions as outlined by the law.
    • If multiple parents or legal guardians are present, each is eligible to apply for an individual card.
  • A patient is allowed a total of two caregivers, with each receiving a Low THC Oil Registration Card.
  • A nonrefundable fee of $25 is applicable.

What can a Medical Marijuana Caregiver do for their patient in Georgia?

Only patients who qualify for medical marijuana use can have a caregiver assist them. The caregiver is responsible for acquiring the low THC registry card on behalf of the patient. If the caregiver is attending to multiple patients, they are permitted to register a separate card for each patient under their care. Caregivers are not limited in the number of patients they can assist and must be residents of the state to avail themselves of Georgia’s cannabis oil program.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in Georgia

In Georgia, caregivers must be over the age of 21, be a Georgia resident, and have their medical card approved by the state before they can begin caring for a patient. One who follows the rules of the department and assists a qualified patient in using medical marijuana is also a caregiver. Caregivers are not allowed to consume medical marijuana that has been prescribed to a patient.

  1. Upon receiving approval, the Truleaf MD physician will input essential information about both the patient and the caregiver into the Georgia Low THC Oil Registry.
  2. Following this, a specially designated Low THC Registry Card will be prepared for the patient and caregiver. This card will be made available for pickup at the nearest county Public Health Office.
  3. Once the cards are ready, an alert will be sent out to the patient and caregiver to inform them that they can be collected, typically within 2-3 weeks from the approval date. An accompanying cost of $25 will be required for each issued Low THC Registry Card.
